Ángel Arroyo
Ángel
Arroyo Lanchas is a professional cyclist who competed from 1979 to 1989. His great
achievements are related to victories in the Tour de France, in Spain, as well
as a great number of races through the European territory.
The medical control commission of the Spanish Cycling Federation
confirmed in 1982 the doping of Angel Arroyo, winner of the Vuelta a España.
After the counteranalysis requested by the cyclist, methylphenidate and facetoperanum
were detected, substances prohibited by the ICU. According to the ninth article
of the UCI medical regulations, the penalty imposed to the Spanish athlete was
as follows: fine of one thousand Swiss francs; a month of suspension of
license, disqualification to the last place of the stage with the real time,
and ten minutes of penalty in the general classification.
With this news we see how doping suspensions have varied greatly over time.
In spite of this, the cyclist lost the race of that edition. In his defense, he
claimed that he would try to win the next races to prove his innocence.
