Virginia
Berasategi is a Spanish athlete who competed in triathlon and sometimes in
duathlon. She was specialized in long distance, winning world, Europe and Spain
competitions of long distance triathlon as well as 7 participations in Ironman
Hawaii.
The Basque Government announced in 2013 its intention to withdraw the
scholarship with which the Euskadi Kirola Foundation Fundazioa sponsors the
sport of high level. The triathlete affected was Virginia Berasategi after his
confession of doping.
On Wednesday, the sportswoman admitted to having consumed illegal
substances for the Bilbao triathlon disputed on May 18, which she won, and
publicly apologized for doing so, she said, "it was a mistake."
The decision to suspend the subsidy to Berasategui is due to the fact
that the athlete herself "has admitted having break the agreement made in
relation to the non-use of doping substances", according to a statement
released by the Basque Government's Youth and Sports Directorate.
The note also stood out that the positive of the Biscayan sportswoman
was detected in a control carried out by the Basque Government after the Bilbao
triathlon.
The regional government reaffirmed its promotion to fair play in sport
and its total involvement in the fight against doping, while expressing its
intention to intensify controls to detect it.
