Virginia Berasategui

Virginia Berasategi is a Spanish athlete who competed in triathlon and sometimes in duathlon. She was specialized in long distance, winning world, Europe and Spain competitions of long distance triathlon as well as 7 participations in Ironman Hawaii.

The Basque Government announced in 2013 its intention to withdraw the scholarship with which the Euskadi Kirola Foundation Fundazioa sponsors the sport of high level. The triathlete affected was Virginia Berasategi after his confession of doping.

On Wednesday, the sportswoman admitted to having consumed illegal substances for the Bilbao triathlon disputed on May 18, which she won, and publicly apologized for doing so, she said, "it was a mistake."



The decision to suspend the subsidy to Berasategui is due to the fact that the athlete herself "has admitted having break the agreement made in relation to the non-use of doping substances", according to a statement released by the Basque Government's Youth and Sports Directorate.

The note also stood out that the positive of the Biscayan sportswoman was detected in a control carried out by the Basque Government after the Bilbao triathlon.
The regional government reaffirmed its promotion to fair play in sport and its total involvement in the fight against doping, while expressing its intention to intensify controls to detect it.
